VOTING 272-4-1, the House of Representatives early Tuesday morning approved on third and final reading House Bill 8969 or the proposed “Military and Uniformed Personnel (MUP) Pension System Act.” It seeks to ensure the sustainability of the pension and other benefits of MUP by creating a fiscal framework that fully supports its funding requirements. Among its key provisions is setting the mandatory retirement age of MUP at 57 years old. It would also provide for automatic indexation of pension and survivorship benefits for MUP and their qualified survivors to adjustments in the salary of MUPs in the active service holding the same rank. Other measures that received the final House nod are 1) HB 8937, enhancing the fiscal regime for the mining industry and 2) HB 9021 or the proposed “Refund for Internet and Telecommunications Services Outages and Disruptions Act.”
The House also adopted House Resolution 1332, expressing the profound condolences of the House of Representatives to the family of Hon. Bayani “BF” F. Fernando, former representative of the First Legislative District of Marikina City during the 17th and 18th Congresses and former Mayor of Marikina City.
