SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Sunday lauded Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala for her historic achievement at the Lexus Eastbourne Open, describing her journey to the finals of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament as a moment that “stirred the soul of a nation.”
Romualdez hailed Eala as a symbol of Filipino pride, grit, and perseverance after becoming the first Filipino ever to reach a WTA Tour final—an extraordinary milestone in the country’s sporting history.
“Alex Eala has done more than just play the game – she has made history and stirred the soul of a nation,” Speaker Romualdez said.
“As the first Filipino to reach a WTA Tour final, Alex has brought the Philippines to the global stage of tennis,” Speaker Romualdez added.
The WTA is the global governing body for women’s professional tennis and organizes and runs the WTA Tour, the main professional tennis tour for women. The Lexus Eastbourne Open is a WTA 250 tournament.
Beyond the feat itself, Speaker Romualdez emphasized the deeper significance of Eala’s breakthrough, highlighting how her courage in the tennis court and sportsmanship inspired Filipinos from all walks of life.
“Beyond records and rankings, what she gave us was something even more powerful: hope, pride, and the promise of a brighter future for Philippine sports,” Speaker Romualdez said.
The 20-year-old Eala had captured the attention of tennis fans worldwide as she fought valiantly in the finals, even holding four championship points in a thrilling match that showcased her grit and maturity under pressure.
“She fought with heart, grace, and courage – holding four championship points in a final that electrified the world,” Speaker Romualdez said.
Although Eala fell short of clinching the title, the House leader pointed to the young athlete’s humility in defeat as a sign of her character and the deeper values she brings to Philippine sports.
“And in defeat, she showed true greatness when she said, ‘I’ll work hard to do more,’” Speaker Romualdez noted.
“That quiet resolve speaks for millions of Filipinos who, like Alex, strive harder every day to rise, to fight, and to uplift our nation,” he further said.
Speaker Romualdez said that Eala’s courage and calm under pressure resonated deeply with the Filipino people, many of whom saw in her journey the same determination that fuels their own struggles and aspirations.
“Alex Eala may have lost a match – but she won a nation’s heart,” Speaker Romualdez said.
Through her performance, Eala reminded the world of the Filipino spirit – resilient, driven and filled with potential.
Her journey, according to Speaker Romualdez, has added another proud chapter to the story of Filipino excellence on the world stage.
“She reminded us that the Filipino spirit is bold, relentless and destined for greatness,” he said.
“Mabuhay ka, Alex. The entire nation stands proud because of you,” Speaker Romualdez said.
