AS the nation prepares for All Souls Day, the Nagkaisa Labor Coalition joins the call of Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas and the families of victims of extra-judicial killings for the ICC investigators to be welcomed to the country.
“Pacta sunt servanda” (treaties must be observed in good faith) and as a good member of the family of nations, we humbly urge the government to rejoin the ICC.
Archbishop Socrates Villegas, a respected voice of reason and compassion, made a significant statement this week, emphasizing the importance of allowing ICC investigators to enter the Philippines. He passionately urged for a thorough probe into allegations of human rights abuses associated with the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.
Thousands of victims and their families have long been yearning for justice and reparation.
The Rome Statute, which underpins the ICC, is a victim-centered Court. Victims of grave crimes (i.e.crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes) serving as the driving force behind its existence. In this unique system, the treaty allows victims to actively participate in ICC proceedings and receive reparations, facilitated through the Trust Fund for Victims, aimed at helping them rebuild their lives
