A magnitude 5 earthquake jolted Zambales on Wednesday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In a bulletin issued at 1:39 p.m., Phivolcs said the tectonic quake struck 51 kilometers southwest of the municipality of Cabangan at 2:55 a.m.
The earthquake was 10 kilometers deep.
Intensity III was felt in Cabangan, Botolan, Palauig, Castillejos, San Felipe and San Narciso, Zambales. Intensity II, on the other hand, was reported in Iba, San Marcelino and Candelaria, Zambales.
Instrumental Intensity II was recorded in Olongapo City, Zambales.
Reported intensity is based on reports of people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.
Aftershocks are likely from the magnitude 5 quake, but no damage is expected, according to Phivolcs.
Damage to property starts at Intensity VI based on Phivolcs’ scale.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs also logged a magnitude5 aftershock some 115 kilometers northwest of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro early Wednesday.
Phivolcs said this was an aftershock of the magnitude-6.4 quake that jolted Occidental Mindoro last March 14.
No reported and instrumental intensities were recorded. Further, Phivolcs is not expecting aftershocks and damage from the magnitude 5 quake in Mindoro. (PNA)
