THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) destroyed ₱486,821,652.67 worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride, locally known as shabu, and marijuana today, November 14, 2024 at the Integrated Waste Management Inc. (WMI), Barangay Aguado, Trece Martires City, Cavite.
Destroyed through thermal decomposition were a total of 65,165.8164 grams of shabu; 0.1100 mL of liquid shabu; and 234,913.7032 grams of marijuana. These illicit substances were incinerated at 1,000 degrees centigrade inside a chamber. All chemical compounds of said substances were completely decomposed or broken down due to the tremendous heat.
The burnt shabu and marijuana were confiscated from various anti-drug operations conducted by PDEA, together with other law enforcement agencies, but were no longer needed as evidence in court. The expeditious prosecution and disposition of drug cases where said drugs served as evidence, led to its immediate destruction.
Representatives from the Department of Justice (DOJ); the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG); local officials of Barangay Aguado, Trece Martires City; representatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other law enforcement agencies; non-government organizations (NGOs); and the media witnessed the destruction activity.
The destruction of dangerous drugs is in compliance with the guidelines set on the custody and disposition of seized dangerous drugs under Section 21, Article II of Republic Act 9165, or The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, and other Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) Regulations.
The destruction process is also an established practice performed by PDEA in an effort to curb illegal drug recycling and pilferage.
