IN the wake of Typhoon Kristine (international name: Trami), which triggered deadly landslides in Laurel and Talisay, Batangas, OFW Party List Representative Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino, a Batangas native, personally visited affected families on Wednesday to offer condolences and much-needed support.
She provided relief supplies, helping families begin the difficult journey of recovery. She also provided financial assistance to the seven (7) grieving families in Talisay who suddenly lost their loved ones due to a landslide, with one husband losing his wife and all five (5) children.
Typhoon Kristine left a vast trail of devastation across the Philippines. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported over 100 fatalities, with 116 deaths documented as of October 28, 2024, of which 10 have been confirmed.
An additional 39 people are reported missing, and 109 have sustained injuries. Kristine has impacted a staggering 6.7 million people – equivalent to 1.6 million families – in 10,147 barangays. Close to a million people were forced into 6,286 evacuation centers due to the threat of further flooding and landslides.
This tragic loss, especially severe in the areas Rep. Magsino visited (Municipalities of Laurel, Talisay, Tanauan, Malvar, and Balete in Batanags), highlights the urgent need for compassionate and proactive government support.
Rep. Magsino’s relief efforts reflect her dedication to the community and align with the Marcos administration’s commitment to aid Filipinos during times of hardship.
This tragedy underlines the need for collective resilience and the value of public service in helping communities recover and rebuild.
